The Sri Lankan military has captured two key towns held by Tamil Tiger rebels in northern Sri Lanka. In a statement, the defence ministry said that with the fall of Thunukkai and Uyilankulam, the military was just 12 kilometres away from south of Kilinochchi, the centre of the de facto state run by the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE). No details on casualties were known immediately, but the army claimed the rebels had suffered heavy casualties. The Tamil Tigers did not immediately comment on the incident.
