Stargazers on La Palma

July 1, 2013

The Spanish island of La Palma is the top viewing site for astronomers on the planet. Some of the world's largest telescopes have been built here. This includes the MAGIC installation which is designed to detect very high energy bursts of gamma rays. The main reason for great night visibility on La Palma is that there is relatively little artificial light that would intervene with stargazing.
