Sudanese army plane crashes

Military sources in Sudan have said that one of their transport planes crashed outside the capital Khartoum on Sunday in a rural area. Roughly 20 people were thought to be on board the Antonov plane.

The transport plane crashed into a desert south of Khartoum on Sunday, causing an unknown number of injuries.

"The pilot informed the airport that he had a problem with one of his engines," prior to the crash, Sawarmi Khaled Saad, a Sudanese army spokesman, told the AFP news agency. "Some people are injured but we are still gathering information about the toll."

He told several sources that roughly 20 people were on board the Antonov transport plane, which was carrying military equipment to a base in El Fasher, the capital of the North Darfur state.

The plane crashed to the west of Jebel Aulia, a popular recreational area south of the capital Khartoum.

The cause of the crash was not immediately clear, the Russian Antonov transport had taken off from Khartoum.

Sudan's military has lost several aircraft in recent years, the most recent example being an August crash in which 32 people, including a government minister, were killed.
