Taliban and Islamabad Negotiate Ceasefire

April 24, 2008

A top pro-Taliban leader in Pakistan has ordered his followers to stop attacks. Baitullah Mehsud, the head of the country’s umbrella militant group Tehrik-e-Taliban, is accused of masterminding the assassination of former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto in December. His order to cease attacks comes amid efforts by the new government to hold talks with Taliban militants in the tribal regions in a bid to end a wave of violence that has hit Pakistan over the past year.
