Close to 1,700 Deutsche Telekom employees gathered in Düsseldorf on Wednesday to protest the company's plan to eliminate 50,000 jobs by 2005. The demonstration's organizer, Helmut Silber, who heads Germany's powerful ver.di services union, accused executives at the ailing telecommunications giant of forcing its employees to pay the price of years of poor management. Ver.di claims that as many as 39,000 of the planned cuts will be focused in Germany, where the multinational firm has its headquarters. Ver.di is planning a second demonstration at Telekom's headquarters in Bonn on Nov. 13.
