Thailand’s Appeals court dropped treason charges against nine leaders of the anti-government People's Alliance for Democracy (PAD) on Thursday. The ruling said that although the leaders had committed illegal acts, including breaching the peace by organising an illegal assembly, the charges of treason were “baseless”. The PAD has been protesting against the government since May and calling for its resignation. Experts say the ongoing protests have further polarised Thai society -- generally people in the country’s rural areas support the government while the urban elites are staunchly opposed to it.
