1. The Outspoken Challenger -Chancellor Candidate Peer Steinbrück

Peer Steinbrück is seen as an adept financial and political operator, a shrewd analyst and a brilliant and witty speaker. The Social Democrats think he is the best choice to run against Angela Merkel in September’s elections, and have nominated him as their candidate for the Chancellor’s office. But the first few months of his candidacy were littered with faux pas: his choice of advisors was seen as cack-handed, this was followed by disclosures about how much he earns from public speaking engagements and some imprudent statements about how much the Chancellor should be paid, expensive wines and Italian politicians. Since then, Steinbrück has become more careful but he still remains mired in the opinion poll doldrums along with his party. With only a few weeks to go before the elections the question is whether Steinbrück can manage to make up some ground in the race for the chancellor’s office. Does he have what it takes to challenge Angela Merkel? This report takes a look at both the politician and the private man.

2. Power Broker - Eight Years as German Chancellor

Angela Merkel has been German Chancellor since 2005. Over her eight years in office, she has tackled the job with a high degree of discipline – in fact, she could be said to function as reliably as a Swiss watch. Merkel currently enjoys almost unprecedented approval ratings in the opinion polls - in particular, her crisis management during the Euro crisis has been highly praised. But her popularity has come at some political cost: the threat of German isolation within Europe, and a growing distance from her own party, the CDU, at home. Some of the coalition government’s big projects such as the u-turn on energy policy are not getting off the ground. The CDU boasts few other political heavyweights, so she seems to be battling for a third term almost singlehanded. The documentary takes stock of Angela Merkel’s time in office.
