The significance of identity and diversity in a globalized world

The process of globalization, the growing worldwide interdependence of people and countries, has accelerated dramatically in the past decade. While globalization holds great potential and has created many opportunities, it has also resulted in tremendous political, economical, cultural and environmental shifts. Among them, the role identity plays today. What does globalization mean for the understanding of identity and diversity? How can identity be defined in times where the cohesion of religion and nations is decreasing? Diversity has traditionally been interpreted positively in liberal democracies. Does this still apply? What has changed?
