Thousands flee southern Kyrgyzstan after the worst ethnic violence in 20 years

Janine RabeJune 14, 2010

Ethnic clashes are continuing in southern Kyrgystan for a fourth day. Russia is reportedly reconsidering a request to send in peacekeepers. A military alliance of former Soviet republics is meeting in Moscow to discuss options. Official estimates say 117 people have been killed since the fighting broke out - but local agencies say the death toll is much higher. Thousands of ethnic Usbeks have fled the country to escape being attacked by Kyrgiz gangs.
