Tibet Protests are Spreading

17/03/08March 17, 2008

The situation in Tibet remains tense. After peaceful protests turned violent on the weekend the Chinese authorities have cracked down on the demonstrators with a heavy hand. The number of casualties is still unclear, and could go into hundreds, according to Tibetan sources. While Lhasa witnessed an unusually quiet day on Monday, security forces elsewhere were busy trying to end a wave of anti-Chinese protests in areas of western China with large ethnic Tibetan populations.
