Tiger Woods confirms December comeback

The 40-year-old American has withdrawn from two tournaments in the past month but is finally ready to return. The 14-times major winner has been sidelined for 15 months with back issues.

Woods announced in a statement on Tuesday that he will make his highly-anticipated comeback to professional golf at next month's Hero World Challenge.

"I am excited to make my return at the Hero World Challenge at Albany and play in this terrific tournament," Woods was quoted as saying on the PGA Tour official website.

The former world number one withdrew from the Safeway Open in October and this week's Turkish Airlines Open, saying his game was "vulnerable and it's not where it needs to be". The Hero World Challenge, which takes place from December 1-4 at Albany in the Bahamas, was the third event he had said he was targetingas part of his latest attempted comeback.

The 18-player tournament is the event where Woods made a similar return to golf in 2014 only for injury to strike again. The Tiger Woods Foundation is a charitable beneficiary of the tournament, which the 14-time major winner has won five times.

Woods last played in August 2015 at the Wyndham Championship before having multiple back operations. His tally of 79 PGA Tour wins is three shy of Sam Snead's all-time record and he is four shy of the record 18 majors won by Jack Nicklaus.
