Leading German tourism firms say they do not expect negative fallout for their industry after the bomb attacks in Madrid. They do not foresee travel to Spain being affected either. "The reaction from clients has been very low-key. We've hardly had any calls," said a spokeswoman for the travel operator TUI. Another large travel company, Thomas Cook, said while it is early to ascertain the middle and long-term effects, they are not counting on a drastic fall in bookings, even for trips to Spain. German carrier Lufthansa reports it has noticed no change in travel volume or reservation activity. A spokesman told the German news agency DDP that with the exception of the attacks in New York and Washington on Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks in the past have had little effect on airline business.
