Typhoon hits land in China's south

Coastal areas in southern China are facing high winds and heavy rain as Typhoon Mujigae sweeps across the region. Tens of thousands of people were evacuated ahead of the storm.

Typhoon Mujigae made landfall near the city of Zhanjiang in Guangdong province around 2 p.m. local time (0600 UTC), according to the China Meteorological Administration (CMA).

There were no immediate reports of casualities or material damage.

Mujigae is expected to affect the southern island province of Hainan, along with the mainland provinces of Guangdong and Guangxi.

Some 60,000 fishing boats were recalled to port to shelter from the storm in Hainan and Guangdong. Authorities in Hainan, a popular holiday island, canceled 68 flights and suspended rail services, the official news agency Xinhua reported.

Even before the typhoon hit land, rain and strong winds lashed the regions, including Hainan - where thousands of Chinese are vacationing during the weeklong National Day holidays.

The CMA warned that as much as 280 millimeters (11 inches) of rain could fall in some places from Sunday morning to Monday morning, with winds of up to 180 kmh (112 mph).

Mujigae previously hit the main Philippine island of Luzon, with the Philippine coast guard searching for more than 20 fishing boats carrying some 150 fishermen caught at sea nearby.
