US Objects To Shariah in Pakistan

15/04/09April 15, 2009

The US has objected to the imposition of Islamic law in parts of north-western Pakistan, saying it goes against the principles of human rights and democracy. Pakistan’s President Asif Ali Zardari endorsed the controversial law earlier this week. The move followed an agreement between the government of North West Frontier Province and the local Taliban. The government insists it will help restore peace in the region but critics say it will strengthen the influence of the Taliban in Pakistan.
