Negotiations on a bailout deal for US banks are continuing in Washington, but at this point there is still no agreement in sight. President Bush made a nationally televised statement earlier assuring Americans that a rescue package would be forthcoming but he offered no details. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, a Democrat, says she too is expecting an agreement to emerge and suggested Congress could be ready to act this weekend. Meanwhile, Republican presidential candidate John McCain, who had broken off his campaign to attend the talks, has announced that he will participate in Friday night's presidential debate after all.
