Vettel takes pole at Indian GP

Sebastian Vettel has secured the pole position for Sunday’s Indian Grand Prix. The German Red Bull driver is hoping to take another step towards a successful defense of his drivers’ championship.

Vettel posted a lap time of 1 minute, 25.283 seconds on the 5.125-kilometer (3.185.mile) Buddh International Circuit on the outskirts of New Delhi on Saturday. This was the the 25-year-old German's fifth pole position of the season and the 35th of his career.

His teammate, Mark Webber of Australia, came in second to give Red Bull both places in the front row of the grid. Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button, both of McLaren, finished third and fourth respectively.

Vettel, who trailed Ferrari's Fernando Alonso in the standings for much of the season, goes into the Indian Grand Prix with a six-point lead, having overturned a 39-point deficit by winning the last three races.

Alonso will start Sunday's race from fifth in the grid. There are four races left in the season.
