Violence Marks Final Phase of Kashmir polls

Amid tight security, voting ended in Indian-administered Kashmir on Wednesday, bringing to an end the crucial final phase of state elections in the disputed region.

But the turn-out in the main town of Srinagar, where some separatist groups had called for a boycott, was quite low and the day was marked by incidents of clashes between security forces and anti-election protestors.

The first six rounds of voting drew turnouts of more than 50 percent amid a series of anti-India protests. The results are expected to be announced on Dec. 28.

Kashmir is divided into zones controlled by India and Pakistan which have fought two wars over the Himalayan region since independence from Britain in 1947.
