Walker: 'You never know what's possible'

DW: What's the feeling like in the Gibraltar squad ahead of tomorrow's game?

Liam Walker: The atmosphere is good. The players are really looking forward to it. No matter what country we are playing against, it is a big game for us. Everyone's given it 100 percent in training so far, and now we just can't wait for kick off really.

Is there more or less pressure on you when you are playing the World Champions? You could argue that your team has nothing to lose.

The main thing is that we come away from the game with some positives and with our heads held high. I don't really go into the game thinking that I am under pressure. I've just got to go out there and enjoy it. And play to the best of my ability.

When Gibraltar played Germany in Nuremberg last November you forced German keeper Manuel Neuer into a wonderful save from a long range shot. What would it have been like to have scored that goal? And do you think you might get another chance tomorrow?

It would have been an amazing feeling to have scored. But it didn't go in. It just went down as a good save in the end. If the chances are there on Saturday we are definitely going to try to take them and have a go at Germany. Who knows? You never know what's possible in one match. If we manage to score it would be another thing to celebrate, and it would show that we are heading in the right direction as a country.

What do games like this mean to the people of Gibraltar?

It was a massive thing for us now be a member of UEFA (happened in 2013 – Ed.) because we were after it for quite a while. To be accepted and to now be playing and competing at this level, where we wanted to be, is a dream come true for everyone. You can see what it means to all the people of Gibraltar. You can see it by the number of fans that come and watch us. They're obviously excited and they want to enjoy it and what we are doing is for the whole of Gibraltar to enjoy.

Liam Walker currently plays for Gibraltar side Lincoln Red Imps, in the Gibraltar Premier Division. One of only two players in the Gibraltar national squad who plays professionally, the 27-year-old has played in Andalusia, Greece and in the UK, with Portsmouth.
