War of Images: Video Activists in Syria

In Syria, a bloody civil war is raging and the state is using the country's media for propaganda purposes. So amateur videos posted on sites like YouTube are often the only alternative source of information.

A smartphone or a simple digital camera can turn an eye witness into an citizen journalist. Especially in crisis-torn areas like Syria, foreign media are dependent on amateur videos to provide them with information about the civilian population or the insurgents. But the international press always has to question the reliability of its sources, as government supporters and terrorist organizations also use the Net to spread their message. We show how these amateur videos are produced and how DW handles them.
