Warner Music Germany Mulls Berlin Move
October 22, 2003The Berlin Senate Administration for Economics announced Wednesday that music giant Warner Music is considering moving its headquarters from Hamburg to Berlin. Warner Music Germany owns record companies such as Eastwest and Wea Records, and its signed artists include pop stars Nena and Marius Müller-Westernhagen. The move would be welcomed by the Berlin Senate, which has already notched up several successes in the race with other major German cities to attract the music industry. Universal Music moved from Hamburg in 2002, and MTV is set to arrive in 2004. Berlin will also be hosting next year's European music trade fair Popkomm, which previously took place in Cologne. A Senate spokesperson revealed Berlin may pick up a subsidy from the EU program to support economically depressed regions, as it did when Universal went ahead with its move.
