DW Sendung Eco@Africa Joy Doreen Biira

On this week's show, we introduce our amazing new host Joy Doreen Biira, who is taking over for Edith Kimani as she begins a new role as an anchor for DW News. Birra, a Ugandan broadcast journalist currently working with Kenya Television Network (KTN) in Nairobi, will bring you the same mix of pressing environmental issues and exciting solutions from Africa and Europe alongside our host in Nigeria, Nneota Egbe.

Also on the show, we take a trip to Kenya where a company has come up with an smart solution to the capital's traffic and air pollution problem. Then from dangerous air in Kenya, to poisonous fog in Zambia where Green Party politician and environmental activist Peter Sinkamba is trying to help those affected by the country's mining sector.

Staying in Africa, we take a look at government plans to phase out genetically modified cotton in Burkina Faso and check out a social enterprise bringing sustainable farming methods to drought-stricken Tunisia.

We also go to the Faroe Islands in the North Atlantic to look at a controversial tradition that sees islanders kill almost 800 pilot whales for food and income each year. Then we meet a civil engineer, who together with a German construction firm, has developed a system to reuse one of world's most polluting substances – concrete. Don't miss it.
