The woman died in the blast that took place near the city's 14th century, Ottoman-era Grand Mosque, a historic symbol of the northwestern city in Turkey on Wednesday.

The state-run Anadolu Agency said police, ambulances and fire brigades were deployed to the scene.

Local television broadcast images of people fleeing the area.

Turkey has recently been hit by several attacks by the self-declared "Islamic State" (IS) group and by Kurdish rebels. But there was no claim of responsibility immediately following the blast.

The US on Tuesday issued a new warning to its citizens about "credible indications" of terrorist threats at tourist areas in Turkey.
