World in Progress: India's coal dilemma

India is facing a dilemma. Some 400 million people live in extreme poverty, without electricity. And there are regular power cuts in big cities. This power shortage is hindering economic growth and the fight against poverty. To produce more electricity, India wants to double its coal consumption. That means the country's economic development looks set to produce huge amounts of greenhouse gases.
