World in Progress: land grabbing Senegal

Emmanuelle Landais
April 5, 2017

In Africa most of land rights conflicts arise from communities being forced off their land to make way for foreign investors. In Senegal, a new legislation from 2012, doesn’t officially recognize rural communities as ‘owners’ of the land, but as occupiers. Now, many communities have no legal ground to protect their land from being used for public works or loaned off to foreign investors.
