World in Progress: Second hand clothes Kenya

Kenya imports some 100,000 tons of secondhand clothing each year. However, these well-intended donations have devastated the country’s once thriving textile industry. That’s why some East African leaders have proposed a ban on these imports. While the ban is welcomed by the textile industry, it could undermine the now thriving business for second hand clothes in Nairobi’s Gikomba Market.
