Government forces backed by Ethiopian troops took control Somalia's third largest city when soldiers from the Islamic Courts Union abandoned their positions after a night of heavy shelling and advanced with tanks, aircraft and a large contingent of troops. Witnesses report seeing hundreds of Islamic fighters many of them Arabs and South Asians fleeing the town in the direction of neighboring Kenya.
