Pro-independence leader Robert Mugabe wins British-supervised independence elections running under the banner of his Zimbabwe African National Union-Patriotic Front (ZANU-PF) party.

Mugabe is named prime minister and changes the country’s name from Rhodesia to Zimbabwe.
