A window to the free world

July 2, 2013

For more than 40 years – at different times and in different languages – Michael from Germany has been a loyal listener to DW’s programming. During the GDR era he appreciated DW as an independent source of information.

Congratulations to DW for its 60th anniversary! This is indeed an anniversary that everyone can be very proud of.

DW is the voice of the Federal Republic of Germany, broadcasting information worldwide in many languages. DW contributes to improving the reputation of Germany everywhere as a supporter of peace and international understanding.

For my wife Ute and me, DW is not just entertainment but rather a special listening experience. DW has had a considerable influence on our lives and we are both very thankful for that. After many years of enjoyment it is all the more regrettable that DW no longer broadcasts shortwave programming in German. A wonderful tradition has become history. But even if DW’s shortwave broadcast in German has been discontinued, I still listen to your station in different foreign languages just like before.

I’ve been a DW listener since 1971. You could say that I grew up with DW. During the GDR era especially, the broadcasts provided me with an important source of information which made it clear that there was more out there than socialism! DW was the most important window I had to the free world. For that I would like to say “thank you” to everyone at DW.

Continue working responsibly and successfully in the hope that DW shall celebrate many more anniversaries. I want to wish all the best to you and your listeners all over the world!

Thank you very much!

Your loyal friend and listener,

Michael
