Murray sets up Raonic semi-final
November 18, 2016Andy Murray beat Stan Wawrinka 6-4, 6-2 on Friday to reach the semi-finals of the World Tour Finals, setting up a possible dream showdown for the number one ranking against Novak Djokovic.
Murray who finished 3-0 in group play, clinched his place in the semis with victory over Swiss Wawrinka in just under 90 minutes.
The Scot claimed his spot by winning the first set. The straight-set success also put Kei Nishikori into the final four, with the Japanese taking second position in the group and facing Djokovic in Saturday's semi-final.
Wawrinka destroyed two racquets at one tense moment in the second set after going down two breaks.
Current number one Murray, who took the top spot for the first time this month, and Djokovic, are duelling for year-end honours, with many hoping the result will be decided with a Sunday final between the pair.
Djokovic is trying to finish number one for the third straight year and fifth time in six years.
Murray will play a Saturday semi-final against Canadian Milos Raonic, whom he beat this season in London in finals at Queen's Club and Wimbledon.
Murray's win over reigning US Open winner Wawrinka featured twice as many unforced errors (27) from the Swiss as from Murray (13). Wawrinka pounded 29 winners to 15 for the home player. The Scot now stands 10-7 over Wawrinka.
"The first set was tight, there were not many chances either way," Murray said. "In the second set I knew I'd already qualified, so it was easier for me to play freely.
"But things can change quickly at this level, Stan is one of the best in the world when he's on his game. With his best tennis he's unplayable.
"I maintained my level and played a solid match, I'm very happy to get through to the semi-final."
Murray has now won his last 22 matches and four tournaments as he plays the season wrap-up semis for the fourth time.
