Another View - Germany’s Contribution to the 55th Venice Biennale

September 2, 2013

The Venice Biennale is presenting contemporary art until the end of November. This year, there’s a novelty: Germany and France have swapped their national pavilions.

The transnational approach of German curator Susanne Gaensheimer, director of the Museum für Moderne Kunst in Frankfurt, went beyond exchanging venues in exploring “Another View”. The German contribution to the Biennale is represented by Ai Wei Wei from China, Dayanita Singh from India, Santu Mofokeng from South Africa and Romuald Karmakar from France, all artists with a strong relationship to Germany but who come from other countries.

The international slant of Germany’s current contribution also sparked some criticism in the run-up to the exhibition. People questioned whether this was a useful way to place European themes in a global context. Dayanita Singh’s comment was, “I accepted (the invitation) because I really don’t like the idea of nationality.”

The 55th International Art Exhibition – La Biennale di Venezia – runs until 24 November 2013. Twenty-eight countries have their own pavilions inside the Giardini, the Biennale’s exhibition grounds. Every country sends one or more representatives to compete for a Golden Lion. DW met the artists involved, and was on hand to exclusively cover the creation of Germany’s contribution.
