When, in 1989, he announced to East German refugees in the West German embassy in Prague that they were free to travel to the West, he sensed that the Communist East Bloc was collapsing. Genscher, a member of the FDP party, subsequently helped to orchestrate German unity along with the Conservative Chancellor of the day, Helmut Kohl. In an interview, he recounts those heady days and reality in today's unified nation.
