Looking to develop in 'one of the world's best leagues'

Sergio Cordova has played a total of 64 minutes in five matches this season with Augsburg. But with a goal and an assist already under his belt, the 20-year-old forward feels confident and wants more.

"Nobody expected me to get playing time so soon," said Cordova who signed for the southern German club after excelling at the 2017 under-20 World Cup in South Korea.

After reaching the tournament’s final with Venezuela, Cordova had offers from multiple clubs in Latin America and Europe. Cordova said he chose Augsburg as his destination as it "is a club where there will be less pressure to instantly deliver" and where he will "get to develop as a player in one of the world's best leagues."

On to the right start with the left foot

Cordova jump-started his Bundesliga career by earning Augsburg an important point after coming late off the bench in the second game of the season. The Venezuela player scored the equalizer in the 89th minute against Borussia Mönchengladbach in front of the home fans.

Going into the new season, many had expected Augsburg to be one of the prime candidates for relegation. However, five games into the new campaign, Augsburg have one defeat and one draw, followed by three consecutive wins for their best-ever start in their Bundesliga history. Cordova is confident about the rest of the season.

"I think we have a great squad with a mix of experienced and young players so we have lots to fight for. I think we will have a successful season," Cordova told DW.

The striker has also set an ambitious personal target for his first season in the Bundesliga.

"My objective is to score 10 goals this season. If I manage to do that, then I’ll be really happy and if not, I’ll have to work harder during my second season,"
