On Friday, a day after the recent mutiny ended in Bangladesh, soldiers discovered at least 38 dead bodies of senior army officers in a mass grave. Among them was Major General Shakil Ahmed, the chief of the paramilitary Bangladesh Rifles (BDR). The fate of at least 70 senior officers, who were taken hostage by the mutineers, remained unclear. The authorities arrested more than 200 mutineers, who had tried to flee their barracks in civilian dress. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina warned that those responsible for the deaths would face serious consequences. The guards of the BDR, who apparently rebelled over poor payment and working conditions, surrendered on Thursday, shortly after the government sent tanks in as a show of force.
