Freiburg's attractive old town, pleasant natural surroundings, excellent cuisine and abundant sunshine make it a favorite vacation destination.
The city's landmark is its Minster, a masterpiece of Gothic architecture which can be seen from miles around. Other hallmarks of Freiburg include the Bächle, small water channels in the sidewalks throughout the city. It's thought they served to fight fires and provide drinking water for cattle during the Middle Ages.
Freiburg's old town is actually quite new. The original old town was completely destroyed during World War II, but has since been reconstructed. The city is also home to what is believed to be Germany's oldest inn, Zum Roten Bären, which has been welcoming guests for nearly 700 years.
Freiburg is also a paradise for cyclists, boasting some 500 kilometers of bike paths. There's no better way to take in the sights of the city and its picturesque surroundings.
