Bayern Inaugurate New Stadium With Loss

Bayern Munich inaugurated their brand new stadium with a 3-2 defeat to city rivals 1860 Munich -- although both teams were composed of former stars including Peter Pacult and Karl-Heinz Rummenigge. Over 32,000 spectators turned up to see the event at the Allianz Arena, which in a little over a year's time will stage the opening match of the 2006 World Cup. The stadium will be officially inaugurated on May 30 and 31, first by 1860 Munich who will welcome first division side Nuremberg, then by Bayern, who will face the German national team. Former 1860 striker turned coach Pacult scored the first goal at the new stadium. Martin Max and Bernhard Winkler then added goals for 1860, known locally as the Lions and who also had Rudi Völler and Thomas Hassler playing. In the second half Ludwig Kogl and Karl-Heinz Rummenigge scored a goal apiece for Bayern, who also lined up Andreas Brehme and Lothar Mattäus. "It's a great stadium to play in, everything was magnificent and the pitch was as good as Wembley's," said Rummenigge, the current president of Bavarian giants Bayern.
