Bayern Munich central defender Jerome Boateng has been ruled out of Germany's next two games after picking up an injury in Saturday's clash with Hoffenheim.

The 28-year-old was forced to come off eight minutes before the end of the weekend's Bundesliga clash and was later ruled out for the forthcoming international matches with San Marino and Italy with "knee and hamstring problems”, according to a statement on the club's website.

The former Hertha Berlin and Hamburg defender has made 67 senior appearances for his country and most recently played in the qualifying matches against the Czech Republic and Northern Ireland, which Joachim Löw's side won 3-0 and 2-0 respectively.

Boateng's absence may of course offer an opportunity to one of the inexperienced young players in Löw's most recent squad. Both Joshua Kimmich and Jonathan Tah could quite easily fill in for the Bayern defender, while fellow senior players Shkodran Mustafi, Benedikt Höwedes and Mats Hummels are also available.
