Last year, almost 12 million visitors came to Berlin - an increase of about five percent compared to 2013. The German capital is among the three most popular travel destinations in Europe, as Michael Müller, Mayor of Berlin, told epd on Monday (23.03.2015).

Some 3.2 million tourists visited one of the city's many historical sites, a 16 percent increase. The Berlin Wall Foundation alone registered more than one million visitors in 2014 - that's 200,000 people more than the previous year.

According to Müller, examining and remembering the past is essential for a democratic society. Memorials and historical sites should therefore always be renewed and presented in a modern way.
