Berlusconi backs down ahead of vote

Italy's ruling coalition has warded off another political crisis, after former Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi made a u-turn on his call to bring down the government. The climbdown followed reports that a number of senators from Berlusconi's People of Freedom party were prepared to go against his wishes and give Enrico Letta's government a vote of confidence.
