The weather on Saturday, the opening day of the Spring Festival showed its sunny side, much to the delight of the beer sellers and fairground staff. Organizers say that the first weekend, which involves the traditional beer keg tapping, attracted some 180,000 visitors to the Cannstatter Wasen fairground.

The rides are set up around three enormous beer tents - from the traditional fairground Ferris wheel to the high speed big dippers like Alpina and Höllenblitz or "hell lightning". With 240 stands and lasting three weeks, the Stuttgart Spring Festival is regarded as the biggest such event in Europe. Some 1.5 million people are expected to visit the fairground by 10th May, when the festival ends with a big fireworks and music display.
