Champions League opener

In their Champions League tournament debut, Tottenham Hotspur came on strong, only to let a two-goal lead over hosts Werder Bremen slip.
Spurs defender Gareth Bale and midfielder Rafael van der Vaart were making trouble for Bremen's defense when Petri Pasanen shot a cross by Bale into his own net in the 13th minute. Five minutes later England international Peter Crouch headed in a cross by van der Vaart to double their lead.
Hugo Almeida brought Bremen back into the game just before the break and Marko Marin scored the equalizer just minutes after.
The two teams will share the points in the group. Spurs host Dutch champions Twente on September 29 in the next round of games, while Bremen face title-holders champions Inter Milan.
Hoewedes sees red
It was less dramatic in France where hosts Olympique Lyon edged a 1-0 win over Schalke 04. Winger Michel Bastos took advantage of some poor defending to lob the ball over Schalke's keeper Manuel Neuer. As center half Benedikt Hoewedes scrambled to clear the ball, his foot pushed it over the line.
Hoewedes was sent off in the 34th minute for a high tackle on Lyon winger Jimmy Briand, leaving Schalke down a point and down a man. Two strong attempts by Schalke in the second half were stopped by brilliant saves by Lyon's goalkeeper Hugo Lloris.
