Building Bridges to Europe?

Condoleezza Rice used a speech in Paris to begin mending bridges with the French government and to urge Europe to "stand ready" to work with the US. Readers comment on Rice and her trip to Europe.

I believe that Dr. Rice, new US Secretary of State, will be very effective in fostering transatlantic relations for the better. She will serve as a brilliant geopolitical statesman in promoting lasting peace in the Middle East. She will speak plainly and will mean what she says. She has a grasp of international geopolitical dynamics unmatched by any in the world today. Even her critics admit her brilliance and ability.-- Young J. Son, USA

I think Condi Rice is good for European integration, because her nomination only proves that the Bush administration is not going to abandon its hard-line unilateralist approach. The US administration is becoming a liability for the international community and the Europeans should cooperate in areas of mutual interest, but also understand that America is a competitor to the EU economy, politics, defence and multilateral values.-- Atilla A Iftikhar

I believe that US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice went too far when she said the unelected mullahs were ruling Iran. Perhaps it slipped her own mind that she too is unelected, being appointed by George W. Bush. We should expect this from attitude from Condi Rice who graduated from White House nanny to US secretary of state. -- Kenneth T. Tellis, Canada

The basic American attitude is: We can do it, let's do it, nobody stops us; the only problem is money, let's bully others to join us. There are fundamentally different outlooks between the Europeans and the Americans. And the Americans do not respect the Europeans' views. They take it for granted that what's good for America is the God's way. The Americans must engage in conversations and not just in monologues. --Takaki Goto, Canada
