Bundesliga Attendance Reaches Record

World Cup fever appears to have gripped soccer fans in Germany with the opening weekend of the 2005/06 Bundesliga season witnessing a new record average attendance of 43,503. In total 391,527 fans packed into nine stadia to help break the previous record of 40,944 set back in 1965. The 340 million euro Allianz Arena in Munich, the venue for the first match of the 2006 World Cup on June 9, had the highest attendance of the weekend, with a capacity 66,000 crowd watching German champions Bayern Munich defeat Borussia Monchengladbach 3-0 on Friday. "The stadium is fantastic. I feel like I have moved clubs," enthused Bayern captain Oliver Kahn. The lowest attendance of the weekend was at VfL Wolfsburg's Volkswagen Arena with 23,360 supporters watching Saturday's 2-2 draw with Borussia Dortmund.
