Celtic eliminate Gibraltar part-timers Lincoln

July 20, 2016

Former winners Celtic made amends for their shock 1-0 defeat to Lincoln Red Imps in the first leg by winning 3-0 in Glasgow. They progress to the Champions League third qualifying round where they will meet Astana.

New Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers can breathe easier after his side overcame the Gibraltar side 3-1 on aggregate.

Lincoln's Lee Casciaro, a policeman in his day job, had scored the only goal in the first leg to threaten a huge shock but 1967 champions Celtic rebounded from one of their most humiliating defeats in Europe to easily go through.

Mikael Lustig, Leigh Griffiths and Patrick Roberts grabbed the goals for Scottish champions Celtic, who next face Kazakhstan's Astana away and at home over the next two weeks.

Aiming for a first return to the Champions League group stage since the 2013-14 season, Celtic would then have to navigate the playoffs when the might of Manchester City, Porto, Villarreal, Roma and Borussia Mönchengladbach enter the fray.

Named after English lower league club Lincoln City, Gibraltar’s Red Imps have dominated the domestic game in the tiny territory at the entrance to the Mediterranean in recent years.
