We look at the history of designing popular chairs with the director of the Vitra Design Museum, Mateo Kries. Classical chair design goes back to the 19th century, starting with Thonet's chair, No. 14, also known as the bistro chair. The use of steel tubing in furniture was the next design revolution with the first cantilever chair.
