Climate Change in China - Drowning in Garbage and Sludge!

August 28, 2012

Chinese cities are drowning in garbage. In 2006, the Chinese government responded by setting environmental policy objectives: by 2010 at least 70 percent of all urban waste water and 60 percent of urban household trash was to be processed using ecologically compatible methods.

The challenge is in environmental management. Of the 585 cities studied, 200 had no central sewage administration whatsoever, and 187 cities had no municipal waste processing plants. Experts from southern Germany are in Gaobeidian 80 kilometers south of Beijing, helping to set up and maintain a waste disposal facility and adapt it to the specific local conditions. This report looks at ways the plant is helping to reduce harmful methane emissions.
