Rock Solid Driving

DW staff (sms)October 12, 2007

A dutiful German driver gave a new meaning to the term "breakdown lane" when he was a bit too enthusiastic in following the letter of the traffic law.

Official cases of police road rage would certainly be on the decrease if drivers would just follow the advice that has been a regular part of drivers' education courses for decades: Slow down and move to the side of the road when you hear or see an emergency vehicle approaching.

But one German driver showed that strictly following all the rules -- even when they pertain to flashing lights and blaring sirens -- isn't always the best way to reach your destination.

A helpful 62-year-old motorist pulled over to the "hard" shoulder of the road to let a police patrol car through then found himself stalled in freshly poured concrete while less conscientious drivers continued to whiz past.

Police said Friday, Oct. 12, that a tow truck had to use a winch to get the man's car out of the unfenced construction site on a German freeway north of Hamburg.

Just how long the man had to contemplate the thought of his car sinking into the concrete is unclear, but police said damage -- both to the tires and highway -- was relatively light.
