Croatia: The Shipyards and the European Union

Croatia is the next candidate for accession to the European Union. It meanwhile fulfills many of the criteria. But not every Croat is eager for EU membership.

Young people upset with Croatia's corruption and national narrowmindedness look forward to joining the EU. But there are also skeptics who fear EU membership will be the kiss of death for many economic sectors. For example, people who work at Croatia's state shipyards, one of the country's biggest employers, are afraid privatization will cost them their jobs. And privatization is one of the preconditions for EU accession.
