DaimlerChrysler Drops Plans for New U.S. Plant

German-American car manufacturer DaimlerChrysler has aborted plans to build a plant near Savannah, Georgia, where it had planned to assemble an American version of its Sprinter line of vines, which are a major seller in Europe. A spokesman for the firm told Reuters on Tuesday that no plant would be built for the time being due to the weakness of the dollar and sinking demand. The Savannah plant would have cost around $750 million (€654 million) to build and had been slated to create at least 3,000 jobs by 2005.
