26/01/10January 26, 2010

Envoys of the exiled Tibetan spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama, have arrived in China to resume their dialogue with the Chinese leadership. The talks between envoys Lodi Gyari and Kelsang Gyaltsen and Chinese officials will be the first in over 15 months.

The two sides have held eight rounds of negotiations since 2002, but with hardly any progress.

China, which invaded Tibet in 1951, considers the Himalayan region an integral part of its own territory and accuses the Dalai Lama of engaging in separatist activities to seek full independence. The Dalai Lama insists he is for real autonomy.

Meanwhile, the US and Britain have welcomed the latest meeting and said they hoped it would produce positive results.
