A series of explosions and gunfire struck a university campus in Nigeria on Sunday. The attack occurred in a lecture hall at Bayero University in Kano that was being used by Christians who were holding a service.

No group has claimed responsibility for the attack. A radical Islamist sect called Boko Haram, which has been linked to al Qaeda, has been responsible for similar attacks in the past. Attacks in January left 186 people dead.

Police put the death toll at six, but military spokesman Iweha Ikedichi said it could be more.

"The attack took place in one of the lecture theatres used as a place of worship by Christians. For sure there are casualties but I can't say how many," he told Reuters.

He added that the university had been surrounded by police and soldiers who were looking for the attackers.
